A day with a friend

Yesterday, I spent the cool of the morning working in the yard, and then headed off to Oberlin to spend the rest of the day with a dear friend. We talked the day away, sharing mothering stories, home decorating opinions, and political frustrations. As I drove home I felt blessed. Blessed to have such a wonderful friend. Mary and I were roommates for two years in college. She was the first “best friend” I ever had, outside of my family. We were inseparable. We discussed everything, shared clothes, exercised together, dieted together, and even traveled around Italy together. Miraculously she ended up in Oberlin after going to Grad school in Texas, so we still get to spend time together. Coincidentally we had our children a month apart. Yesterday we went for a walk. It was strange to think just six years ago on that same street we walked two very single girls, wondering what our future would bring. Would we get married? When would we have children? Where would our degrees take us? Now I pushed a stroller and she wore a baby bjorn. I’ve been married four years, she two and a half. We have both changed a lot since those early college days, but our friendship still stands. What a blessing.

  1. Thanks for coming down! You’ll always be my “best friend.” I was continuing to read “The Happiness Project” and got to the part you had mentioned about doing things that you like to do for fun, not what should be fun. Just spending the day talking with my best friend is one of the things I like to do the most. We don’t have to “do” anything. I hope it was as much fun for you as it was for me. Love you!
